What do I do then? Part 1.
Recently I applied for a contract to work in a school and I needed to write a letter of interest explaining what I do and why I thought I would be good for the job.
Anyone who has read or listened to my blog over the last couple of weeks will know that I am currently battling with defining my practice. I decided to write a little bit about some of the things I had done in the last few weeks.
This is the letter I wrote.
My name is Dom Breadmore. I am a Digital Media Artist and I live in Coventry.
But what is a Digital Media Artist? Well, I love technology, particularly gadgets with cameras and screens. I’m really lucky because I spend my life doing what I enjoy. I work with lots of people in lots of different places, including working in schools like yours.
A lot of the work I have been doing recently has been to do with using gadgets and the internet to help children’s voices get heard. I think it is really important that children talk about their time at school and what they enjoy (and find difficult) about learning.
Maybe the easiest way of describing what I do is to show you some of the things I’ve been up to recently.
I just finished a project with Creative Partnerships in Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire where I worked with 53 schools exploring how they could make better use of digital media to communicate with people inside and outside of school. I spent quite a lot of time working with the School Council and the Boys Research Rangers at Edgewick Primary School in Coventry and now they write this blog (like a newsletter on the internet) http://edgewick.edublogs.org/
I’m also working with a school in Coventry called Hill Farm where I working with the Creative Crew to get the children writing their own curriculum. They are helping planning lessons and teaching the teachers to use new technology. They make videos and handouts that help people to find new ways of learning that they think might be fun.
One of my favourite schools is New Invention Junior School near Walsall. I’ve been working there for nearly three years. I’ve done lots of projects there, working with teachers and children. My favourite was starting the school News Team in year 5. They run like a professional newspaper. Children from around the school write ‘press releases’ and the News Team interview, film and photograph stories for the school blogs. http://newinvention.edublogs.org
I’ve been spending a lot of time this term and Bearwood Primary School in Sandwell. We have built a TV studio in the school and are just starting an internet radio station to help the children talk about all the great things that they do at school. You can listen to some of the radio programs here: http://bearwoodradio.wordpress.com/
I’m also doing a big project this term with Warwick Arts Centre (a really big theatre and art gallery in Coventry) called Cov Cool Kids. I’m working with 17 classes from 6 different primary schools to make an hour long dance and digital media performance. We’re doing photography, animation, video and sound recording.
I hope this gives you an idea of the things that I like doing. If you’ve got any questions for me I’d love to meet you all. You can contact me using the details below.
Thanks for taking the time to read my letter. If you want to watch more videos and see more of what I do then have a look at my website at www.dombreadmore.co.uk
…I got the job so I guess it explains my work in schools quite well.
But of course, I don’t just work in schools. I feel a part 2 coming up.
